Top Binz!
There have been a lot of updates to Top Binz! since I first played it back in beta. It’s now seven full levels in its main story mode (complete with cutscenes) and has a never-ending freeplay, online leaderboards, tons of unlockable trucks and outfits, bonus round mini-games, and full-game speedruns. There’ve already been some new updates to make the controls smoother since launch, too, and this V2 really seems to be the best form of the game. It’s not drastically changed from the beta, but every part has been sharpened and expanded.
In this game, you drive a garbage truck. You drive left and right along a street that felt a little Paperboy-inspired, pick up garbage bins that are randomly left out on the curb in front of an ever-increasing number of houses, then drive it to the left (or the right, once you get to the harder recycling levels) to dump it. It uses a combination of the d-pad, buttons, and crank to lift/dump, so you’ll always be doing something.
By the time you get to the later levels, you’ll be juggling the different types of trash (don’t mix ‘em!), fending off hooligans/birds/raccoons with your push broom, and cleaning up garbage spills and banana peels littering the street, all while trying to just do your normal job. And freeplay mode gets harder every certain number of points scored, so there is a challenge to be found eventually. However, the game is never really “hard.” I beat the whole thing without one complaint (you can only miss so many bins before failing a level, but I didn’t miss a single one). The freeplay leaderboards might be where the real competition is, but they also don’t get hard for a number of minutes. Would be great for kids! And the unlockables and secret endings will keep you coming back for more, too.
All in all, it’s a pleasant little game that isn’t here to hurt you. Even when there’s a lot to do, you have time to grab each bin, shoo away each raccoon, and dump the trash. If only our jobs in real life gave us all the time we needed to do all the things we’re supposed to do!
