MESHCHERA

Whether you call it “creepy-cozy” or “cozy horror,” games that are spooky in a fun way are totally IN right now. Ever heard of Dungeon Bodega Simulator? Games that have some creepy stuff but don’t lean into jump scares or gross things, it’s the candy and costume part of Halloween without the fake body parts in the front yard. Enter MESHCHERA for the Playdate.

It’s a merging game like you may have seen before (think Threes or Pocket;City), but with a folk horror twist. The playfield is a 6x6 grid, a spooky marsh that’s slowly filling up with spiders and skeletons and — if you’re good enough — a house with legs. Place three grasses next to each other to merge into flowers, then three flowers merge into a tree, then a campfire, and things get a little weirder from there.

You can store a piece in your bank like modern Tetris games, and whether you use that mechanic to delay a creature that’ll block you or just set up a bigger combo farther down the line is up to you. If you’ve played NecroMerger or anything like that before, the flow and feel of the game will be easy to understand, and there’s a unique aesthetic, but it doesn’t really go too far beyond tried-and-true merge game gameplay. We’re not reinventing the wheel here, but once you start filling the screen with wandering creatures while trying to set up big combos, it can get really tense.

There is a variety of randomly appearing folk items like a magic mirror, a potion, and… a meteor, and each will have a different effect on the playfield, occasionally pulling you from the brink. How long can you play, and how high can you score? Killing monsters helps, but then you also have to deal with its remains, and those get in the way, too! Once you get good, a single game can last quite a while as your score gets up into the tens of thousands, and the Catalog version (I’m playing pre-release so haven’t gotten to check!) just HAS to have online leaderboards, so it’ll be fun to compare your scores to other Playdaters the world over. Come merge in a spooky way with me.

(Released May 7, 2026, on Itch and September 1, 2026, on Catalog. Copy provided by developer. The dev also talks about some of the aesthetics and design choices in a two-part Reddit post, and I would’ve loved some of this lore to be actually in-game. Still! It’s neat to see all the legends that inform design choices, and it’s essential reading to get the most out of MESHCHERA. Of course, you can also play it just fine without knowing any of this stuff, but it’s like watching the special feature lore on the DVD of Donnie Darko, or watching Blair Witch with subtitles so you can understand what all the spooky voices offscreen are saying. You don’t fully know what you’re missing until you see it.)
